I got home very late last night to discover that Amazon had shipped Carousel Tides early. (At least, I believe the drop date is next Tuesday.) I sat down to read "just a few pages" and didn't put it down for 130 pages. Darnit! Now I'm bleary-eyed from lack of sleep and am only halfway through. Waaaa!
So far, so good. It's a little lacking in adjectives, but the story moves along at a good clip. I'm enjoying the slow elaboration of the secondary characters, and the new vocabulary isn't too hard to pick up.
My only real complaint so far is that we don't actually need the sexual element of her torment as a child to deepen the characters or move the plot along. Really, we don't. That was even a bit jarring, actually.
I hope that the brief glimpses of the past are meaningful rather than illustrative, and that everything comes together at the end in a grand fun finale without any "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal
" kinds of twists.
