Books: City of Pearl

Today to Read
I haven't read a new book in a few weeks almost a month now. I ate this one up in one sitting.

City of Pearl should have been an ordinary book. It was part Huff and part Webber. It was Starbridge and Uplift. It was a reaonably well-written book, with a typical plot and expected characters. But there was more to it than the usual trope that comes with an alien exploitation novel. The talent that Kareen Traviss has in telling the story is what makes me so pleased with having spent time with her. There were lectures about individual responsibility that were inextricable to the lectures about civic virtue. There were lines and times in the book when I found the logic inescapable and yet still wanted to argue that it just wasn't fair. The conflicts of faith were obvious in the beginning, and more subtle at the end when it counted for cost. And I've never had more reason to become vegetarian in my life.

Those who have choices must make them. And the wider the choices one has, the more restrained one must be in making them.
