Today to Read
Fire Touched, by Patricia Briggs. Urban fantasy. Hardback, 342 pages. Book nine in the Mercedes Thompson series. Keeping it.

This book is all about the wolves' relationship with the fae, and doesn't do any weird right turns in the middle (boo at Frost Burned). We have some new wolf names for variety, and another of Bran's special manipulations of relationships. The Flanagan made the transition from short story to plot assist, and Thomas Ho is back as well. Uncle Mike is back. Bouclaire is back. Zee and Tad are back. Fedeal shows up briefly. And the Baba Yaga provides the punchline this time. (And she is less of a jerk than back with Mary Jo in the bar.)

There are a couple of fight scenes, but not as much graphic, blow-by-blow as usual. We have the massive opening fight, and a few fights down the line, but more of this was talking with various fae, and maneuvering and thinking how to solve the various problems. This lack of major action is good, because one of our new characters is basically a fire elemental jammed into a boy shape. It's bad, because the ending seems way too easy in some parts. What's really odd is the lack of Gabriel. Jessie is right there in the plot, but to me, Gabriel's absense was marked.

I picked it up because I like the series. I recommend it to everyone who feels the same. I don't recommend it to new readers of the series. Also, be sure to brush up on Night Broken before starting this one, because Joel is in this book and the references to Coyote (and Gary) are both cryptic and vaguely important.

Definitely my pick in what to do on a rainy Sunday when I have no energy. :-) Read it yesterday, enjoyed it. :) Wish I'd brushed up on Night Broken, because everything was "Oh, yeah! I'd forgotten..."

Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm really glad I re-read Night Broken if only to remember that Joel is pronounced Hoe-el and that his two forms are Big Dog! and dog-shaped lava.
