Debunking the Toyota acceleration myths

This is an interesting article about statistics, media hysteria, and possible other causes of Prius problems than actual hardware/software malfunctions.

As I drive a Toyota Camry in the supposedly dangerous group, I've been wondering for a while how I can get my hands on the brake-failure rate data. I'd like # of fatalities & injuries linked to it, # of Toyotas in use during this time period, and comparable statistics on other makes of cars. Are there statistically significantly more injuries or deaths in Toyotas in the past few years than in other cars? This should be really, really easy to prove one way or another with the correct (=useful) and truthful dataset.

A quick search leads me to 34 or 52 deaths. Meaningless without the other data. :-P

Hmmm.... what other ways could I sneak up on this data...

Oh, sorry. Statistician. Numbers are my thing.

Not at all. I totally understand.

I drive a Prius. I've read various accounts that say it takes 14-16 seconds for both brakes to override the accelerator even if I don't shift into neutral, and that if I do shift into neutral, a Prius will coast down like any other car.
