This morning, there was a young deer standing on the median of the highway. His (her?) body was parallel to traffic, and he was facing my car as I came around the curve. As I watched, he kept swiveling his head left and right, flipping his ears. The rest of his body was still, though, and he appeared calm. I wondered if he was considering traffic, and thinking about which way to try to cross the highway. I wondered if he had the sense to wait for a break in the cars, and if he would - by some miracle - judge time and distance correctly. For his sake, and the sake of the cars in front of which he would cross, I certainly hope so.
