Today's argument, part 1 (open post)

This is the first part of a chat-list post discussing gay rights and gun rights....

The post:

First of all, no one has a "right" to a job. Because if you have a right to a job, that means that someone else has an obligation to hire you. Which means that your "rights" are impinging upon theirs. You have the right to *work*, of course. But that doesn't mean that anyone is required to pay you for it. The reason I have a job in computers is because someone was willing to pay me to create software. There was no
obligation there.

No one has a "right" to housing. Because if you have a right to housing, that means that someone else is *obligated* to provide it for you. Which is nonsense. The reason I have a house is because I bought it. No one had to give it to me.

You don't have "gay rights", as you put it. I don't have "straight rights". Black people don't have "black rights". Getting yourself tangled up into class warfare, whether it be black/white, rich/poor, gay/straight, left-handed/right-handed, always ends up being counter-productive.

My addition:

So, in summary, you have a right to participate freely in a capitalist economy. You may buy or sell services, and buy or sell objects. You have no direct right to 'an object,' only the right to participate in the market exchange that may net you that object.
