Goats, gripes, and grasping for greatness
RIP to GCF Sancho

Sancho is dead. I came home to find him down in the pasture, disoriented and in terrible pain. I threw all the other boys into the barnyard to give Sancho some space, called the vet, heated a towel and grabbed the big red goat-coat for Sancho, then sat with him in the moonlight, keeping him company and talking quietly to him. The vet came out and helped me send Sancho on to the endless pastures. I hope Jared is waiting for him.

The big cheese.

Goodbye, Sancho. Thanks a lot for being our reliable, frat-house nutcase.
I'll miss you.

Sancho was taller than his mother by the time he was two years old. That's baby Summer goat in the background.

I'm so sorry, reedrover!

Oh, I have a 15-year-old goat and I know if she makes it through this winter it will likely be her last.... she's had a wonderful goat life, but it is so sad.

Godspeed, Sancho!

Thanks for the sympathy. And my sympathies to you about your oldster, too. Knowing they are fine right now doesn't make the anticipation go away. It's never easy.

The vet practice sent the new guy, so we had a rather awkward first date. He said and did the right things, and thanked me for calling for help. I had to warn him that I still have Jessie and Loki also toddering around the field so he might be invited out to help with two other old goats this year.

How old are Jessie and Loki?

Was Sancho your oldest ever?

I hate when people ask me (which they always do), "How long do goats live?" All I can say is, "This one is 15." Like us, they live until they don't.

Yes, Sancho was my oldest ever that I could prove. April might have been older, but she didn't come with any information.

Loki will be 13 in February and Jessie turns 15 in March. Loki is assuredly the oldest boy I've had. I wethered him when he as nine or ten so that he could have an old age and not get beaten to death. The bucks don't seem to last as long, regardless. I understand it is because they break down faster due to the boom and bust physical cycles of gaining muscle mass, beating themselves for six months, and then doing it again.

Yes, my husband was curious whether Sancho was a wether - I said I wasn't 100% sure but certain suspected as much.

Oh yes. Sancho was wethered at 2 or 3 months old. We only had the one pasture at the time and we were leaving on a trip to South Africa. We didn't want to come home to an Oedipal situation with a worried/frustrated house-sitter.
